Getting started

How do I make a meme with this tool?

Pick Square or Portrait, upload an image, type your caption and press Add Text, drag the text where you want it, then press Download. The whole thing usually takes under a minute. There's a step-by-step guide on the homepage.

Do I have to install anything?

No. The meme generator runs in any modern web browser, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. There's no app, plugin or extension to install.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes, with one limitation. On a phone or tablet you can upload a photo, add captions with the Add Text button or by tapping the canvas, edit them, and download the result. Dragging text to move it currently needs a mouse, so fine-tuning positions is easiest on a computer.

Do you have a library of meme templates?

Not at the moment. You bring your own image: a photo from your camera roll, a screenshot, or a template you've saved. This keeps the tool simple and means everything you make starts from a picture you chose.

Editing text and images

How do I add text at the top and bottom?

Add each line as its own text layer. Type your top line and press Add Text, then type your bottom line and press Add Text again. Each new layer starts near the top of the canvas, so drag the second one down to the bottom of the dashed frame.

How do I move or change text after adding it?

Click and drag any caption on the canvas to move it. To change its words, font, size or colors, select it in the Text Elements list, press Edit Selected, make your changes and press Apply. The red × next to a layer deletes it.

Can I write text on more than one line?

Each text layer is a single line, and long text doesn't wrap automatically. For a two-line caption, add two layers and stack them. If a line runs off the edge of the image, shorten it or reduce the font size.

Can I change the outline thickness or turn off bold?

Not separately. All captions are bold, and the outline thickness scales with the font size so it stays proportional. You can change the outline color, or make the outline invisible by setting it to the same color as the text.

How do I zoom in or reposition my image?

Use the Image Controls sliders. Scale zooms the picture from 10% to 200%, while X Position and Y Position move it left, right, up or down. Press Reset to return to the original fit.

What happens if I switch between Square and Portrait?

Your image and text stay exactly where they are; only the dashed crop frame changes. Portrait uses the full 1080×1350 area, while Square keeps the middle 1080×1080 section, so check that your captions are still inside the frame after switching.

Is there an undo button?

There's no undo history yet. To reverse a change, delete the text layer and add it again, or press Reset in Image Controls to restore the image's original size and position.

Downloading

What file type do I get, and can I get a JPG?

Downloads are always PNG files, which keep text edges sharp and work on every social platform and messaging app. If you specifically need a JPG, open the PNG in any image editor or your phone's photo app and export or save it as JPG.

Why didn't my download start?

First make sure you've uploaded an image, since the Download button needs one. On some iPhones and iPads the meme opens in a new tab instead of downloading; press and hold the image there and choose to save it. Also check that your browser isn't blocking downloads from the site.

Why is part of my caption missing from the download?

Anything outside the dashed crop frame is cut off when you download, and in Square mode that includes the darkened areas above and below the frame. Move the caption fully inside the frame before downloading.

Do you keep a copy of my memes?

No. Your images are edited on your own device and never sent to our server, so we have no copy of your pictures, captions or finished memes. When you close the tab, your work is gone unless you downloaded it. Our Privacy Policy has the full details.

Can I use the memes I make for commercial purposes?

We don't restrict how you use your downloads, and no credit or attribution is required. You are responsible for having the rights to the image you started with, though; a photo you took yourself is safe, while a movie still or someone else's photo may need permission for commercial use.

Is it legal to use famous meme images?

It depends on the image, how you use it and the country you're in. Sharing a meme for fun is common, but the original photo or artwork may still be copyrighted, and commercial use carries more risk. If you're unsure, use your own photos or images with a free-to-use license. See our Terms of Service.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has finished loading, editing and downloading happen entirely in your browser, so you can keep working even if your connection drops. You need to be online to open the page in the first place.

Ads and cost

Why are there ads, and does it work with an ad blocker?

Ads cover hosting and development, which is what keeps every feature free and every download watermark-free. The editor works the same with an ad blocker turned on, but allowing ads on this site is the simplest way to support it.

No. There are no paid plans, no locked features and no limits on how many memes you can make or download.

Troubleshooting

My image won't load. What should I do?

Check that the file is an image your browser can open, such as JPG, PNG or WebP. iPhone photos saved as HEIC open in Safari but may not load in other browsers, so convert them to JPG first. Very large photos can take a moment to appear; if nothing happens, reload the page and try again.

Why does my font look different on another device?

The generator uses fonts installed on the device you're editing on. If a font like Impact or Comic Sans isn't installed, your browser substitutes a similar one. Once you download, the PNG looks the same everywhere you share it.

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Email contact@freememegenerator.cc with what you were trying to do, what happened, and which browser and device you were using. Feature ideas are welcome too; they help decide what gets built next.
